U10 Red v St Johns-On-the-Hill, Chepstow

The U10 Red team welcomed St John’s-On-the-Hill, Chepstow to The Bishop’s Field on Saturday. St John’s started well from the kick off demonstrating some intent from the off. CSL took a little while to get into the game and were falling off tackles. Eventually, CSL had some possession where Elliot P demonstrated good pace rounding a number of defenders to score a try. Both teams enjoyed phases of possession and both teams enjoyed a share in the tries. St John’s were establishing dominance at the break-down and were counter rucking well. Rahul O, was a constant thorn at the break-down and carried the ball well. Laurence U and Dan T combined well in open play with both securing the ball at the break-down. Henry L and Harry V grew into the game with Harry V making some telling tackles as the match progressed. Henry L acted as a great link ensuring the ball got away from contact.

In the second half, with 5 fresh players coming on, saw CSL exert dominance, although the St John’s spirit battled right until the end. Charles C always looked dangerous with the ball in hand, scoring some excellent tries. Henry R worked hard in the tackle area and at ruck time and tackle technique improved as the match went on. Sebastian T scored a great try, showing vision, special awareness and some quick feet. Corey G and Ben T were a great asset when they came on. Corey was a natural link ensuring continuity with some great passing, he also scored a great try. Ben T showed real potential with an impressive display both in attack and defence. A lovely lofted pass out of the tackle to Corey G at the end was sublime. Nate A scored a number of tries but I was most impressed with his two assists which showed vision and an unselfish attitude.

A great game to watch and referee. It was pleasing to see the boys making progress through the match, especially in contact. However, the most pleasing aspect for me was seeing some excellent team tries where the ball went through two phases and ended up with the winger scoring through some excellent handling. Best of luck for the rest of the season.
